Strengthening Rural Women’s Resilience and Well-Being during COVID-19

This year’s GivingTuesday is a key moment to come together with the Ghana Health and Education Initiative (GHEI) and take action to support rural women in Ghana! Our evidence-based Health Programs are effective entry points to strengthen resilience and well-being of women in the villages we serve.

COVID-19 and the Impact on Rural Women

Women are disadvantaged in this pandemic, a problem aggravated in rural areas. COVID-19 has put a spotlight on the urgent need for Strengthening Rural women’s Resilience and Well-Being by empowering and protecting rural women. In rural Ghana, women have unique health needs and since COVID-19, they are less likely to have access to quality health services, essential medicines, and vaccines. Further, they suffer from the spread of misinformation and lack the critical access to technologies to improve their work and personal life

Despite all of this, they play a crucial role in building local capacity, eradicating poverty and make invaluable contributions towards the development of their community in agriculture production, food security and nutrition, land and natural resource management and rural enterprises. Moreover, GHEI’s female staff members are leading health solutions and solidarity during this pandemic in their communities.

Since COVID-19 started, the work for rural women has increased — but so have the risks due to insufficient health infrastructure and services. Rural women are laboring under acutely disadvantageous conditions such as lack of sanitation and hygiene in households, insufficient knowledge of nutrition and healthy diet, restricted mobility etc.

So, how does one stay safe from COVID-19 when there are not safe sanitation and hygienic conditions, and when access to quality health is already precarious?

Your support to GHEI will ensure delivery of essential and quality healthcare services to rural women, and will empower them with the knowledge they need to improve their and their families health.

Together, we can not only strengthen the resilience and well-being of rural women but also build their capacity to face future crises.
